They look similar—but they behave differently
Both are made from stainless steel wire. Both can be used in industrial environments. And both are available in different opening sizes.
But the way the wires are joined changes how the mesh behaves.
Welded mesh: rigid and stable
Stainless steel welded wire mesh is produced by joining wires at their intersections, creating a fixed grid.
The result is a rigid structure with stable openings.
That makes welded mesh a good fit for:
* Machine guards
* Safety barriers
* Cages
* Storage racks
* Partitions
* Equipment protection
The fixed grid is useful when the finished mesh needs to stay flat and maintain its dimensions.
Woven mesh: flexible and fine
Woven stainless steel mesh is made by interlacing wires rather than welding them together.
It can be more flexible and can be produced in much finer specifications, which is why woven mesh is widely used for filtration, screening, and sieving.
Which one should you buy?
Here’s the easiest way to think about it:
Need a rigid panel? → Consider welded mesh.
Need fine filtration or flexibility? → Consider woven mesh.
Of course, there are exceptions.
Some industrial applications use both types in different parts of the same system.
Don’t confuse “stronger” with “better”
This is where purchasing decisions sometimes go wrong.
A buyer may see that welded mesh is rigid and assume it should replace woven mesh everywhere.
That’s not how it works.
For fine filtration, woven wire mesh can offer much finer openings than typical welded mesh. For a machine guard, however, the flexibility of woven mesh may be a disadvantage.

Consider fabrication too
Welded mesh is convenient when fabricating rigid panels, frames, cages, and guards.
Woven mesh is easier to conform to curved or irregular shapes, but cut edges may require additional finishing depending on the application.
So when ordering, consider not only the raw mesh but also how it will be cut, bent, framed, or installed.
