How to choose the right mesh count and wire diameter for stainless steel crimped mesh?

When choosing stainless steel crimped wire mesh, the two most important numbers are mesh count and wire diameter.

Mesh count means how many openings there are in one inch. Lower mesh count means bigger holes — good for coarse screening of stones or gravel. Higher mesh count means smaller holes — suitable for fine filtration or powder screening. Common range is 1 to 24 mesh, but can go much higher.

Wire diameter is simply the thickness of the wire. Thicker wire means stronger mesh, better for heavy loads and abrasive materials. Thinner wire means lighter mesh, good for finer work. Wire diameters typically range from 0.5mm to 10mm.

Here's the key: mesh count and wire diameter work together. You can't just pick one and ignore the other. For example, a 5-mesh screen with a thin wire will have bigger openings than the same 5-mesh screen with a thick wire. The wire takes up space, so thicker wire means smaller openings, even at the same mesh count.
